Concerted effort needed to combat migration

It is known that a large number of Ethiopians have been living in Saudi Arabia without living license. In line with the countries recent decree to let unauthorized foreigners living in that country, the Ethiopian government has been concernedly working to help its citizens repatriate home safe. According to recent information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over 130,000 undocumented Ethiopians get their final exit visa from Saudi Arabia up to Tuesday 18 July, 2017.

 

So far, due to the concerted efforts exerted by the government and people of Ethiopia, over 60,000 have already been returned to their country.  Despite the  engagement of the government, people and other stakeholder  for the speedy return of undocumented citizens from Saudi Arabia before the 30-day extended amnesty period expires on July 24,2017, the number of returnees is nonequivalent to the expected unauthorized Ethiopians living in that country.

 

In fact, the problem of migration and its impact is universal. Some researches indicated that, the immigrants have been rising from time to time.  They have been assimilating faster in the Arab Countries, the United States, European Nations and other African countries.

Illegal immigration has become a highly contentious issue in Ethiopia basically the defused attitude in the society in giving high valuing working abroad at any risk than working at home with some possible gains. This kind of belief could emanate from failure to observe opportunities at home. Some economic analysts argue that the economic effects of illegal immigration not only in harboring countries, but also for their birth countries.

When the illegal immigrants leave abroad; they spent a lot of money taking from credits from other people, close friends or their parents.  In fact, from the destination country’s point of view they have impacts when there are inflows of foreign labors, they could reduce jobs for their citizens.

On the other hand from their origin countries’ point of view, the illegal immigrants, who mislead by brokers who described, going abroad as the ends to alleviate poverty, failed to pay back the money they spent for their illegal travel abroad.

In some cases, their parents at home will be liable for further problems.  Some studies indicated that the economic impact on their hosting countries is so insignificant as the economic impact on their origin countries.

The number of illegal immigrants not only in Saudi Arabia, but also in other European and Western Countries has been increased from time to time over the past ten years.  That is why the international community’s concern for illegal migration has also developed.  Ethiopia is one of the countries in Africa where a number of youngsters illegally left their country for a better life although contradicted to the reality.

As a result, the need for creating a strong system that could help legalizing citizens who immigrate to other countries, particularly to the Arab Nations has risen; thereby, avoiding the security threats posed by unauthorized entry.

Various studies indicate that the real impact of illegal immigration and the influx of undocumented workers cost not only the immigrants themselves but also their families and the country.

Illegal immigration has a lot of undeniable negative effects. Several Ethiopians faced various challenges in those countries. The number of Ethiopians who succeeded in Arab countries is really insignificant due to lack of adhering to legal system. They have no right to move from one place to another and work freely. If they found somewhere they are directly deported without any property. They faced various psychological and physiological damages.

 

Irrespective of such challenges, many youngsters are still leaving their country. According to   recent studies, a number of illegal immigrants found themselves at a higher risk. Some of them are being killed by their employers. Others are committing suicide just to shorten the incomprehensible earthly suffering.

 

Ethiopia and Kenya have agreed to work together in curving illegal migration and deal with human smuggling as it has been showing an upward trajectory where hundreds of Ethiopians finding their way into South Africa through Kenya.

These smugglers have been misleading young Ethiopians with fabricated stories and instigate them to leave their country.  In this regard, only the government can’t stop migrating illegally. It is indispensable that the entire people should come together to effectively tackle the problem of human trafficking.
