Regional Government Rehabilitating Displaced People:SEPDM Chairperson

Southern Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement (SEPDM) announced that activities are in full swing to rehabilitate internally displaced people in the region.

Chairperson of Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM) has said activities are in full swing to rehabilitate internally displaced people in the region.

During a press conference she gave here today, chairperson of SEPDM as well as speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Muferiat Kamil said the regional government has started a rehabilitating program for internally displaced people.

According to Muferiat, SEPDM and the regional government have been jointly working with the federal government and Oromia Regional State to rehabilitate displaced people from Gedeo and Gujji zones.

Following the recent clashes between communities on the border of Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR) and Oromia region, close to one million people have been forced to flee their homes since July 2018.

Stating lack of quality leadership as cause of this mass displacement, the rehabilitation works will be realized in a short time, Muferiat said.

She added that the region has already rehabilitated thousands of displaced people in the region’s capital city was rocked violence and resulted death, injury and dislodgment.

Speaking on SEPDM’s leadership change, the chairperson stated that the movement has brought young leaders who have public acceptance.

“We hold an extensive public consultation at all level that enabled us to address public grievance and get a fresh leadership”, she indicated.

Currently, the region has brought violence under control and restored relative peace, she said and adding that “we are working for the rule of the law and identified those suspects who have been involved directly or indirectly in the recent violence that rocked the city of Hawassa.”

Muferiat further emphasized that there are still some violent groups who have been instigating hostility in the region by prompting ethnic tension, saying that “the region never tolerate such kind of violent activities and groups instigating chaos.”

Moreover, SEPDM has been conducting a study that would enable the region to give effective public service and improve regional infrastructure.
