Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway Depicts Principles of Belt and Road Initiative: PM Abiy

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that the Addis Ababa – Djibouti railway is a showcase for the connectivity principle of the Belt and Road Initiative. 

In his remarks at the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the role that the railway playing in facilitating trade between the two countries.

The railway which has a capacity of transporting 24.9 million tons of freight annually was built by two Chinese state-owned companies.

Inaugurated in January 2018, the railway provides landlocked Ethiopia with access to the sea, linking the capital Addis Ababa with Djibouti.

Since more than 95 percent of Ethiopia’s trade passes through Djibouti, the railway is playing significant role in facilitating the import-export trade.

Stating the investment-led economic policy and reforms being undertaken in Ethiopia, Abiy encouraged companies to invest in Ethiopia.
