Endeavoring peace in the horn

A. Wondimagegn

At the tip of globalization diplomacy is very cognizant in countries’ foreign policy affairs. There is thus a
significant value to handle good relationships between neighboring countries. At the same time,
diplomacy goes beyond borders. Hence, the course of diplomatic activities in the conduct of world
politics has to add value, and has to be able to work hard in the hostile regions of the horn of Africa to
pinch up the economic interest. Based on this understanding the political leaders have created a certain
spirit of negotiation that eases or impedes agreement.
Ethiopia is doing diplomatic relations with several neighboring and non- neighboring countries with
different ruling government. When the country was ruled by the previous governments like the kings and
the military leaders, it had a good relationship with several western countries. This diplomatic work was
very important in expanding its diplomatic relations with the benefit of mounting its political, social and
economic environment. Then after, diplomatic relations play an important role in a country’s economic,
political, and social spheres.
Ethiopia is working to strengthen the diplomatic relationship to ensure that the countries enjoy sustainable
economic relations with the Eastern African countries. This is due to the fact that its Foreign Policy that
was implemented in 1994 augmenting the first stance to the relation with the neighboring countries in
accompanying sociopolitical and security matters. Indeed, the East Africa is very a confounding region.
Meantime, there is nothing more than an advanced foreign diplomacy affairs to crack the nation’s
problems as much. That is why the Prime Minister started his work within neighboring countries.
Ethiopia and Eritrea have historical and cultural ties above all the neighboring countries. The two
countries, have been in a state of ‘no war, no peace’ situation for almost two decades. Since then, their
relations were remained chilly.
These days, after 20 years of hostility, Ethiopia and Eritrea have resumed their diplomatic relations. And
now, the newly appointed Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr) took office in April, announcing a
series of sweeping reforms and, in a little while plans to mend ties with Eritrea in his inaugural speech to
the house of people’s representatives.

After two decades, the easing of tensions has been already evident, setting the stage for a new era of
harmonious affairs to restore diplomatic relations. The leaders have now agreed to end this situation and
nearby to political, economic and social connections. So far, Commercial flights between the nations
would resume, plans to reopen embassies in the respective capitals, communications link, like the ability
to make telephone calls had been restored. Supplementary, surface transport is also to begin soon with the
start of maintenance work on the road. Beside this, there seem to be some hesitations; most Ethiopians
tend to think that the relation could not be moving beyond implementing the Algiers peace agreement.
But it has been seen on the ground within a short period of time that both shown their interest. And stand
to agree to benefit from closer ties.
With the election, Ethiopia is following a new course not only in relation with its neighbor, but also in its

internal governances. Hence, it is working to heal for the lifting of sanctions on Asmara using its position
as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. This was addressed by UN Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres in Addis Ababa that he hoped the sanction regime will be lifted sooner based on
Ethiopia’s role and great contribution for the reconciliation. Even though in the international arena the
reconciliation taken by Ethiopia with the encounter Eritrea is the most significant vows to peace in the
horn.
Although, the peaceful resolution of the Ethiopian and Eritrean conflict would strengthen the regional
stability and will restore the resilience to the economy of both countries. Furthermore, by strengthening
the diplomatic relation and friendship, Ethiopia is working on building its good image and in the public
affairs.
Generally, both Ethiopia and Eritrea leaders signed a peace treaty to put a formal end to a state of war
between both nations paving the way for greater economic cooperation and improved ties. In addition to
the clear impact on Ethiopians and Eritreans, this fragile peace may also help resolve other conflicts in the
nearby countries. Eritrea has border disputes with Sudan and Djibouti as well, but since Ethiopia has good
relations with them, there’s now a better chance of smoothing over these grievances.this is a highlighted text
